Position description – Technical Writer, Full-Time

This is a full-time (40 hours per week) position responsible for working with other members of the team to create and maintain online help documentation, technical magazine articles, bulletins and announcements, internal and external communications, documents, presentations, and training materials for BASIS International Ltd. in Albuquerque, NM.

  • Responsible for communicating and coordinating with members of the technical documentation and software development teams to gather information for writing tasks; these persons may be in the headquarters building, working from home, or even in another country and time zone
  • Develop, write, and edit local and online product documentation and related materials
  • Proofread and review documentation submitted by another team member
  • Assist in incorporating customer comments and markups into existing documentation
  • Manage the conversion of documents into published web documentation for BASIS products
  • Select photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts to illustrate written materials
  • Review and update existing documentation that may be out of date or otherwise incorrect
  • Work with management and the technical documentation team to identify and prioritize writing tasks, and to establish and meet deadlines
  • Complete special documentation and product-related projects as assigned

Education – The employee we are looking for has:

  • A Bachelor’s degree with a major in Education, English, Communications, Linguistics, Technical Writing, or a related field, with a 3.3 or higher GPA for degree-related college coursework
  • Non-related degree fields may be considered with a GPA of 3.5 or higher, together with these demonstrable skills:
    • attention to detail
    • logical and analytical thinking, with problem-solving abilities
    • technical writing and public speaking skills

Skills – The employee we are looking for is:

  • Highly organized
  • Able to proofread and edit technical materials
  • Skilled in one or more word processor or publishing software packages
  • Motivated to work with persons of diverse cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds
  • Fluent in spoken and written English, and knowledgeable of English grammar and punctuation
  • Skilled in oral and written communication; an effective listener
  • Skilled in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing
  • Able to coordinate and maintain good working relationships with other employees and customers

    It would be nice for you to have:

  • Some exposure to spoken and written languages beyond English (our products are sold and supported internationally)
  • Skill in public speaking (presenting and teaching)
  • Experience with HTML and CSS
  • Experience with version control systems such as Git or SVN
  • Experience with the MadCap Flare content management system
