Registration and Installation of a Redundant BASIS License using the Admin tool in BBj

Description:

1. Run the Admin tool from the BBj program group. In the ‘Adminstration Wizard’ window, select ‘License Registration Wizard.’ Click Next. 

2. In the ‘License Registration Information’ window, enter the Contact Information in the left panel. In the right panel, enter the BBj product license information: 

a) serial number and the authorization number. 
        EXAMPLE: Serial Number: BBJ000123 
Auth Number: 050999123 

b) In the ‘Host Name’ field, enter the Host Names of the three (3) machines that will be used as the redundant servers, separated by a comma. 
        EXAMPLE: server1, server2, server3 

NOTE: Host Names must be separated by commas. 

c) In the ‘Host ID’ field enter Host IDs of the three servers in the following format: 
        server1 hostid, server2 hostid, server3 hostid 

NOTE: The Host Names & Host IDs are required for the license and must be separated 
by a space. Each pair must be separated from the previous by a comma. 

You can optionally specify the port on which the BLM servers will listen between the hostname and hostid by including a colon (:) and the port number. If you do not specify a port number then the default of 1700 will be used when the license file is created. 

        EXAMPLE: server1:port hostid, server2:port hostid, server3:port hostid 

Once the information is entered and verified to be correct, click Next. 

3. In the ‘License Registration and Delivery Method’ window do NOT select ‘Register and License Automatically’ as this will register and install the license automatically on the current machine. 

4. In the ‘Registration Method’ group box, select the method with which you want to send the license information to BASIS. For redundant licensing, email is the preferred method for license registration and delivery. 

5. Once both the Registration method and Delivery method are selected, click Next. The License Information Confirmation window is displayed – click OK to confirm the Serial Number and Authorization Number. The Emergency Contact Information window is displayed – confirm the contact information (and ensure it is correct) and click OK. A message box will be displayed stating that the license registration was successfully sent via EMAIL. 

6. Monitor your incoming email for the new license file. It will be from ‘BASIS Automated License Generator’ with a subject line of “BASIS BBJ License, Serial Number: BBJ0000123”. If you don’t receive this email response within 10-20 minutes of sending in the registration, it’s likely that something has occurred causing the license to not be generated or it cannot be delivered. Repeat steps 1-6 taking special care to confirm the accuracy of the following information: 

a) Consistent HOSTID information. 
Verify that the information entered matches exactly the required syntax shown in Step 2.c) above. (Punctuation and spaces are critical here.) 
b) Verify the return email address entered in Registration Method window and in the License Delivery Method window are correct and valid. 
c) If the Fax Back method was chosen to receive the license, verify that the area code and telephone number entered is correct. If applicable, verify the correct country code was entered. Also, ensure that your fax machine is able to receive faxes, i.e. is not offline or out of paper, is not currently busy receiving other faxes. Please note that Canada, Puerto Rico and U.S. Territories do not typically require a country code be prepended to the fax number. 

Resolution:

INSTALLING THE BBj REDUNDANT LICENSE: 
NOTE: Do not select the short cut to install the license contained in the email; follow these instructions for installing the new redundant license. 

1. Save the email attachment to a file with a name such as 999BBJEWFBBJ001234.lic. The most important thing to remember when saving the attachment is that it MUST have a ‘.lic’ extension in order for the BLM to read it. Any other extension of this file will cause the BLM to ignore it. 

2. Verify the BLM is installed on the three servers that have been selected for the redundant licensing but that it is not currently running. If the license manager is running, the Admin tool can be used to stop it prior to the next step. 

3. On all three BLM servers, confirm that there are not any other license files installed or left in the BLM directory. Rename or remove all files with a ‘.lic’ extension that exist in the BLM directory on EACH server. Changing the filename extension to ‘.bak’ or ‘.old’ makes it easy to verify that a file is not going to interfere with the BLM using the new file. 

4. Copy the previously saved license file to the three servers where the BLM is installed, placing it in the same directory as the basis_lmgrd.exe. Under Windows, this location can be verified by running the Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services applet and looking at the properties page for the BASIS License Manager and the “Path to executable”. 

4. Create a simple ASCII text file (using MS WordPad or Notepad) and name it ‘basis.lic’. This file must contain the 3 server hostnames, hostid info and the port where the BLM should listen in addition to some other key information. 

EXAMPLE basis.lic file 
SERVER Server1 ANY 1700 
SERVER Server2 ANY 1700 
SERVER Server3 ANY 1700 
USE_SERVER 

5. Copy the basis.lic file to any machine where there are BASIS products (BBj, PRO/5, VPRO/5, ODBC) installed. The location in which you place the basis.lic is dependant upon the BASIS product you execute from the machine. This pointer file is used by the executable to determine where to find a license. 

If using Visual PRO/5 then place the basis.lic in the /vpro5/ directory; for BBj the basis.lic is placed in the /basis/ directory; and for PRO/5, place the basis.lic into the /pro5/ directory where the executable resides. If you have multiple BASIS products installed on the same machine then copy the basis.lic file into each directory where the executables reside. 

6. Once the redundant license file is in the directory where the BLM executable resides and the pointer license file (basis.lic) is in the correct directory as described in 5. above START the BLM on the first machine named in the redundant license file, then START the BLM on the second named machine, then START it on the third machine. 

Start each BLM individually but as close together as you can timewise. In order for the redundant capability to be established, all three BLMs must be started initially. Once started and therefore established, redundant licensing is in effect as long as 2 or 3 of the redundant BLMs are running concurrently.
