Description:

When trying to run Visual PRO/5 from a Windows 3.x machine, an error such as “This version of MSVCRT40.DLL is not compatible with Win32s” may occur.

Resolution:

Visual PRO/5 needs specific runtime DLL’s in order to operate correctly. MSVCRT40.DLL is one these. This particular library is interesting as there are two versions–a 32-bit one for Windows 95 and Windows NT, and a 16-bit version for Windows 3.x. Despite the fact that there are two versions, the two versions share the same name. So, in order for Visual PRO/5 to run correctly, the correct version of this DLL must be available. That means that if Visual PRO/5 is run from a Windows 3.x machine, the 16-bit version of the file must exist in the Visual PRO/5 directory. If Visual PRO/5 is run from a Windows 95 or NT machine, the 32-bit version of this file must exist in the Visual PRO/5 directory. 

This can present a problem if Visual PRO/5 is installed on a server’s drive, and will be accessed from both 16-bit and 32-bit operating systems. In order to ensure that the correct version of the DLL is used, there are two methods: 

1) Install Visual PRO/5 twice, once from a 32-bit operating system and again from a 16-bit operating system. Visual PRO/5 should be installed in two different directories, so that each directory will have the appropriate copy of the DLL. Then, in order to run Visual PRO/5 from a workstation, all that has to be done is to run it from the correct directory. If it will be run from a Windows 3.x machine, then the copy with the 16-bit DLL’s should be used. 

2) Install the 32-bit versions of the MSVCRT40.DLL in the 32-bit operating systems windows/system directory, and the 16-bit versions of the same file in the 16-bit operating systems windows/system directory. Then, remove them completely from the Visual PRO/5 directory.
