00347: Graphic characters are are not displayed properly under SCO Openserver 5

Title:

Graphic characters are are not displayed properly under SCO Openserver 5

Description:

When running PROGRESSION/4 or PRO/5 on SCO Openserver 5.0 system, the graphics character (using ‘gs’ & ‘ge’) are not being displayed as lines. Instead, they are being displayed as various characters from the PC character set. This is happening on the console as well as other terminals.

Resolution:

SCO changed the default high bit character set for 3.2.5.0. A temporary (single-session) fix is to run “mapchan -n”. You can make the change permanent by editing /etc/default/mapchan and removing “ibm” from appropriate lines. The mapchan file is a text file that determines the character mapping set for terminals. You can individually configure the character set for each terminal with this file. By default, all terminals use the new character set. Here’s how it looks:

tty01 ibm
tty02 ibm
tty03 ibm
…

Removing the ibm from any line will force the older character mapping scheme for that terminal.

Note: If the BBx session is being run from a Windows terminal emulator, ensure that the font being used by the emulator includes the graphics character set in the upper order ASCII range. Several fonts have an international character set in place of the graphics characters, making it impossible for BBx to draw graphics.
