Title:

Error 18, TCB(10)=-5, Access Denied, under MS DOS, Windows, and Novell during file access

Description:

* An Error=18, TCB(10)=-5, will occur when using the VLM.EXE version 1.0x with a NetWare version of BBx. The solution is to update the VLM drivers to version 1.10 or higher.

* An Error=18, TCB(10)=-5, will occur when using the VLM.EXE version 1.20 with a NetWare version of BBx, but only when trying to create a pre-existing directory

* This has also shown up with Visual PRO/5 when trying to create a file. It turned out that there was an invalid drive that wasn’t dsksyn’d. After dsksyn’ing the drive in the config.bbx file, the error went away. The way BBx works, if you don’t specify a fully qualified path it will attempt to find and create that file on every available drive and path. In addition to this taking some time, you can also run into undesirable situations. Those include getting an error 12 because the file already exists on another non-dsksyn’d drive, getting write violations because a CD-ROM is not dsksyn’d, and getting permissions errors because you don’t have correct permissions to create that file on non-dsksyn’d drives. With this in mind, it’s obviously preferable to specify the complete path to the file. If that isn’t done, then you must be very careful and look at your prefix and dsksyns to determine the extent that BBx will go to before actually creating your file.
